Everybody knew that the huge water hazard at Cherry Hills would make trouble for U.S. Open competitors, but nobody was prepared for the bizarre blowups it provoked on opening day. First, Doug Sanders was startled by a splashing fish as he prepared to drive. He promptly hooked his shot into the water. Then smoldering Tommy Bolt popped two balls into the pond, boiled over completely and fired the offending club after the errant balls.
