For watchers on the riverbanks from Henley to the Charles, rowing is a sport for spring, an excuse for happy picnics in the grass. For the college galley slaves it's a different matter entirely. Here, practicing as they have been all winter, are the rowers of the University of Washington. If they have cold feet, it's only at the thought of what California might do to any crew that missed a day out on the water.
