Joan Birkland of Denver defeated Susan Williams 4 and 3 to win the Colorado women's golf title for the third straight year. Eight days later the versatile Mrs. Birkland won the state tennis championship by easily beating top-seeded Anne Rose 6-0, 6-0.

Joan Birkland of Denver defeated Susan Williams 4 and 3 to win the Colorado women's golf title for the third straight year. Eight days later the versatile Mrs. Birkland won the state tennis championship by easily beating top-seeded Anne Rose 6-0, 6-0.

Ed Glick, a 16-year-old high school senior from Huntington, Ind., thrashed past 23 other, swimmers in the AAU four-mile championship at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, lapping nearly all of them as he won on the smooth Wyoga Lake course. His time was 1:29:57.6.

Connie Jones, a high school teacher and former Spokane beauty queen, won her 10th Spokane women's amateur championship, edging 15-year-old Peggy Conley one up in the finals. It could be Mrs. Jones' last amateur win. She plans to join the LPGA tour next year.

Kenneth Gilbert, an Air Force sergeant who took up target shooting only 11 months ago, was the sensation of the world skeet championships at St. Janvier, Que. He shattered 250 targets in a row at one point, later broke 200 more to win the 12-gauge title.

Jerry Cromwell, 18, of Long Beach, Calif. coolly ignored the torpid midsummer heat in Corpus Christi, Texas as he upset Mike Belkin, the defending champion and the recent national junior singles winner, and won the national jaycee junior tennis title 6-4, 6-3.

William J. Moore was honored on his 90th birthday during the opening of the Cape May, N.J. tennis courts, a project he helped start. Mr. Moore graduated from Howard University in 1892 and has been giving tennis lessons to youngsters in Cape May for 65 years.
