Cornelius Choy of Ewa, Oahu fought a 594-pound Pacific blue marlin for six hours 45 minutes in a battle he described as "a little bit for the fish, a little bit for me," before boating it for the largest catch of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

Dan Sherry of Hamilton, Ont. set two records at the British swimming championships in Blackpool, England. His 58.1 for the 110-yard butterfly lowered the world record by .9 seconds, and his 55.5 for the 110-yard freestyle set a new Canadian mark.

Myrtle Simpson, a Glasgow, Scotland housewife and mother of three, became the first woman to traverse the Greenland ice cap, 450 miles from Angmagssalik to Sondre Strom Fjord. She, her husband and two friends made the journey on skis in 33 days.

Bill Urban of the New York Athletic Club won the national AAU all-round track and field championship for the third straight year with a 7,481-point total for 10 events. Urban placed first in the 120-yard high hurdles (15.5) and in the shotput (45 feet 8).

Jim Masserio, a caddie at the South Hills Country Club in Pittsburgh, who is 16 and self-taught, won the U.S. Golf Association's Junior Championship at Wilmington, Del. in his first try, beating Lloyd Liebler of Portsmouth Va. 3 and 2 in the final match.
