Gareth Hayes, an engineering major at North Carolina State, set cross-country course records in each of his team's first four meets. He ran five miles in 25:47 at Wake Forest, 27:16 at Virginia, 24:30 at Old Dominion and 25:12 at South Carolina.

Walter Rowland, 10, a quarterback in the Memphis YMCA grade school football program since he was 7 years old, scored touchdowns the first five times he carried the ball, once on a punt return of 55 yards, as his Westhaven School team beat Graves 68-0.

John Kerr, quarter-back for Willamette High, Eugene, Ore., completed 25 of 49 passes, ran 22 times for 155 yards and gained a total of 503 yards, a league record, as Willamette came within a point of beating the division leader, Thurston of Springfield, Ore.

Steve Cullum of Wickett, Texas, a retired industrial superintendent and a golfer for 29 years, scored holes in one on two consecutive days at the Monahans ( Texas) Country Club—sinking a 195-yard three-iron and a 135-yard nine-iron.

James Doty of Dedham, Mass., a shotputter at Harvard in the mid-'50s and now an insurance salesman and long-distance swimmer, covered the 22 miles from the South Boston Yacht Club to Boston Light and back in 61� water in nine hours 22 minutes.

Tom Gentile, a soccer forward at Wayne Central High, Ontario Center, N.Y., set a new national high school career-scoring record with his 112th, a header in the first period, and 113th goals while leading his team to a 2-1 win over Marion High.
