Charley Garfinkel, a 34-year-old schoolteacher, won the Buffalo racquetball championship for the fifth time in the five-year existence of the tournament. He also won the city squash racquets title in 1969 and the tennis crown in both 1964 and 1968.
Lori Mason, a 9-year-old from Lake Stevens, Wash., is believed to be the youngest person ever to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. All six members of the family of Dr. Gene Mason have now reached the summit of the peak. The climb took the family five days.
Marion Pericin Jr. and Mike Gambee, a pair of 15-year-olds, have led their ninth-grade basketball team at Whitford Junior High in Beaverton, Ore. to a 14-0 record. Pericin, the son of the former Portland State basketball coach, scored 42 points in a 32-minute game, and Gambee, whose father Dave played for 13 years in the NBA, had a high-point game of 41. The Whitford basketball team is averaging 84 points per game while holding the opposition to 55. Pericin's scoring average is 16.5 per game, Gambee's 16.
Kathy Bevers, a senior at Wellman ( Texas) High, scored 32 points to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 53-35 victory over Flower Grove. She has scored more than 2,000 points in her career and is averaging more than 25 points per game this season.
Pete Gaughn, a senior at Nazareth High in Brooklyn, set a national scholastic flat-floor record with a 4:13.1 clocking in the mile run at the Iona College Spiked Shoe Club meet. Gaughn also has run two miles in 9:13 and 1,000 yards in 2:14.6.
