To be sure, Kelly
is not playing in every game. A left-handed batter, he is being used only
against right-handed starters. But the White Sox do not fall apart when he is
out of the lineup. John Jeter, his right-handed alter ego, was hitting .326
last week. They are of a size and kind: Jeter is a little taller and about as
heavy as Kelly and a speedball, too. But there is no mistaking him for an Irish
comedian or a Cleveland running back. Given a few more weeks of .400-plus
batting, nobody will make that kind of mistake about Pat Kelly, either.
