Wendy Goelz, 6, a first-grader at Herbert Hoover School in Tonawanda, N.Y., won her seventh speed skating championship of the winter, the girls' seven-and-under Peewee title in the North American outdoor championships held at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Wilfred Jones, 70, a retired state labor relations director from Glencoe, Ill., is the national 70-and-over clay-and grass-court tennis champion. He defeated the first four seeded players to win each tournament. Jones was the No. 1 singles player at MIT in 1931.

Archie Talley, a senior at Salem (W. Va.) College, wound up his college career with an NAIA record of 1,329 points this season and a four-year total of 3,720, which places him third among all collegiate scorers behind Pete Maravich and Travis Grant.

Timothy G. Brown, a freshman at Trevor Browne High in Phoenix, won the state chess championship by defeating Richard J. Mann, 26, of Scottsdale. Timothy is currently ranked 11th in the United States among 16-and-under players.

Dr. Collister Wheeler, 82, of Portland Ore., set three national age-group (80-and-over) swimming records at a Masters meet in Portland. Wheeler's marks are 43.3 for the 50-yard freestyle, 1:39.2 for the 100-yard free and 3:33.8 for the 200-yard free.

Thom Hunt, a senior at Patrick Henry High in San Diego, set a U.S. high school indoor mile record of 4:02.7 when he finished sixth at the San Diego Indoor Games. He broke by 3.9 seconds the 4-year-old mark of Vince Cartier, of Scotch Plains-Fan-wood ( N.J.) High.
