Vanderbilt and Kansas State went bowling while Notre Dame stayed home; Herschel Walker took the money and ran after vowing he wouldn't; Cal beat the band—and Stanford—with the whackiest kickoff return in history (page 212). Last year was indeed unpredictable, and this one could be even more so. Who knows, for instance, what will happen when Texas A&M sends honest-to-goodness students down on kickoffs (page 192)? The biggest surprise, however, could well be Michigan. Coach Bo Schembechler has had better teams in Ann Arbor, but perhaps never a better shot at winning the national championship.
