"That route is rated an 8b-plus climb," Weeks says. "That makes it the hardest deep-water solo ever done." McClure had actually already made the climb, but the cameras had been elsewhere when he did it. His painful fall happened when he was trying to re-create the achievement for the DVD and was just a few feet from the top. McClure did come back for another day of climbing, but he took it easy and did not try the Ring of Fire again. Deep-water soloing, he learned, can hurt after all. "It's not total, complete fun," McClure says. "Well, actually, it is total, complete fun. But there is risk to be had."
