THE RUNDOWN Picking up John Olerud was a masterstroke because of what he's done defensively at first base. Olerud doesn't have the same power that he used to have, but he's a veteran and still a threat.... Leftfielder Hideki Matsui is extremely dangerous right now. He's finishing strong.... Mike Mussina doesn't have the big velocity, but his knuckle curve is still very good.... Jon Lieber will run up high pitch counts because he doesn't have drop-dead stuff. If the Red Sox are patient, they will get to him.... Kevin Brown's stuff is average but his competitiveness will help him against Boston.... I don't think Mariano Rivera's recent family tragedy [two of his wife's relatives were electrocuted at his pool in Panama on Saturday] will affect him. He's such a professional and so mentally tough.... Tanyon Sturtze was very good down the stretch after a career of inconsistency. He's the only long reliever that manager Joe Torre trusts. FOCAL POINT After a horrible start this spring, shortstop Derek Jeter has been a very productive hitter [.316, four RBIs in the Division Series]. This has been his best year defensively. He's as much a clutch player as anybody in the league--the new Mr. October. HOW TO BEAT THE RED SOX New York doesn't have a power staff and the Red Sox, especially leadoff hitter Johnny Damon, are good at fouling off pitches and working their way on base, so the Yankees will need to vary their pitch sequences. They'll also have to throw inside to Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz and move them off the plate. The Yankees' hitters will have to wear down Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez and be selective to get into the Boston bullpen.
