Beane professes that he's flattered by the support and laughs at the canard, popular among his many and vociferous detractors, that breaking up the Big Three will expose the fallacy of his quantitative methods or that the coming season is an acid test. "The acid test was after Giambi left, after Tejada left," he says. "If people are holding their breath and waiting for us not to win 90 games, guess what? At some point it's going to happen. My job is to make sure we're still a healthy business and poised to get back there." ?
