The Double A Springfield Cardinals closed their season with a whimper on Sunday, losing to the Arkansas Travelers, but Ankiel went out with a bang. He was 3 for 4 and hit his ninth and 10th home runs in his first multihomer game of the year. In 34 games at Double A, Ankiel batted .243 and knocked in 30 runs--a respectable showing for someone making the switch from pitcher to rightfielder, but not enough to convince the big club to make him a September call-up. As of Monday, St. Louis had no plans to add him to its roster.
