THE TALE OF a remote school with 454 students winning a state hockey title might sound like a script for Hoosiers on Ice. But the record of Roseau—which has the smallest student body in Minnesota's Class 2A—speaks not of an underdog but of a powerhouse. Dating to 1946 the Rams have a record 51 state tournament wins, and on Saturday they took their seventh title with a 5--1 win over Grand Rapids as goalie Mike Lee (below) made 28 saves. (Hermantown defeated Marshall [ Duluth] 4--1 in the Class A final.) Many from hockey-mad Roseau, a town of 2,756 near the Canadian border, made the 440-mile trek to St. Paul to watch. Says coach Scott Oliver, "There's pride in Roseau hockey. These players aren't just playing for themselves."
