Who's Hot
Ohio State
The men's and women's hoops teams won the Big Ten, the third Division I school
that has won a conference in those sports and in football the same year. Said
center Terence Dials after OSU (and J.J. Sullinger, left) clinched its first
outright title since '92, "People across the country forgot about the
Buckeyes."
Miroslav
Satan
Last Thursday in Buffalo the Islander and his wife, Ingrid, had a baby, Miros
Jr. That night on Long Island his shootout goal beat the Devils. Said the
Slovak to New York's Newsday, "I've been running all day on some kind of
hormone."
Luke
Ridnour
The third-year Sonic was giddy about his surprise selection to try out for the
U.S.'s 2008 Olympic team, saying it was "something I couldn't ever believe
would happen." He'll most likely get a chance to play at this summer's
world championship, which fellow U.S. point guard Chauncey Billups will
miss.
Gerry
McNamara
O.K., Syracuse lost his final regular-season home game, but man, did G-Mac get
some lovin'! The Orange's first advance sellout in 26 years included 3,000 fans
from McNamara's Scranton, Pa.; the Carrier Dome rocked with cries of
"Ger-ry! Ger-ry!"; and he responded with five three-pointers, making
him the alltime Big East leader.
Who's Not
Duke
The men, with Greg Paulus (right), closed the regular season with two ACC
losses--including an ugly stumble versus UNC that spoiled Senior Night. The
Blue Devils women got upset too, falling to Maryland for the first time in 15
games. Coach Gail Goestenkors's silver lining: "Every time we've lost,
we've learned."
Virginia Tech
QBs
While former Hokie Marcus Vick pleaded guilty to two traffic violations--his
court date for allegedly brandishing a firearm is next week--his potential
heir, 18-year-old freshman Ike Whitaker, was arrested and charged with
purchasing and possessing alcohol.
Allen
Iverson
The U.S.'s best player in the 2004 Olympics was not invited to try out for the
2008 team, and G.M. Jerry Colangelo deepened the diss by implying he was after
team players and that AI isn't one. Said Pacer Jermaine O'Neal, "How can
you not invite one of the world's top five or 10 players? That's
mind-boggling."
Bjrn Borg
Be glad you weren't Bjrn yesterday. The tennis star is auctioning five
Wimbledon trophies and two of his wood rackets and denying a comment that he's
doing it for "financial security." Borg said he just "thought the
trophies and rackets might be something that someone might want to
have."
