Fuelhardy
During a pit stop
on the 150th lap of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, Sam Hornish Jr. pulled away
before the fuel hose could be removed, knocking over a crewman who was then
doused with water (inset) to prevent him from being burned. Hornish overcame a
penalty assessed by race officials for the mishap and won by the second-closest
margin in 500 history (page 58).

Virginia
midfielder Kyle Dixon couldn't get off this shot, but he and his teammates
cashed in on enough of their chances against UMass in the NCAA men's lacrosse
final; attack Matt Ward and midfielder Matt Poskay (inset, with Ward left)
scored five goals each in a 15-7 victory on Monday in Philadelphia. Six
straight second-half goals broke open a close game and propelled the Cavaliers
(17-0) to their fourth national title.

Men of the
World
Immediately after
their matches many of Europe's best soccer pros were photographed for Faces of
Football (near right), a book published in May by Nicolai Verlag, Berlin, with
proceeds going to the charity SOS Children's Villages. These portraits are of
players who will appear in the World Cup, beginning on June 9 in Germany (page
60).
