SATURDAY 6/10
Stanley Cup
Finals, Game 3, Hurricanes at Oilers
It's a battle of Cinderellas: Edmonton is the first No. 8 seed to make it to
the finals, while Carolina has been led by rookie goalie Cam Ward (above), who
has a goals-against average of 2.07 since taking over in the first round. NBC 8
p.m.
Belmont
Stakes
Kentucky Derby champ Barbaro is hurt, and Preakness champ Bernardini is
resting, so for the first time since 2000 the Belmont will be run without the
winners of the first two legs of the Triple Crown. The field will include
Bluegrass Cat and Steppenwolfer, who finished second and third, respectively,
behind Barbaro at Churchill Downs. ABC 5 p.m.
NCAA Men's and
Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships
You don't have to be a Rhodes scholar to be a shot-putter, but Florida State's
Garrett Johnson (below) is both anyway. Before he heads to Oxford, Johnson--who
was a legislative assistant to Florida governor Jeb Bush and had the
second-farthest indoor throw in the world last year (66' 8 3/4")--will join
his Florida State teammates in Sacramento, where the Seminoles men are among
the favorites to win what would be their first national title. CBS 3:30
p.m.
Bernard Hopkins
vs. Antonio Tarver
The 37-year-old Tarver already has plenty in common with Roy Jones Jr.: Both
are dominant light heavyweights and both have tackled Hollywood-- Jones in The
Matrix Reloaded and Tarver (below, with Sylvester Stallone) in the upcoming
Rocky Balboa. Tonight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Tarver hopes to
do one more thing Jones has done: beat Hopkins. It won't be easy. The
41-year-old Hopkins, who has said he will retire after the fight, has lost only
twice since Jones took a decision in 1993. PPV 9 p.m.
SUNDAY 6/11
Arena Bowl XX,
Orlando Predators vs. Chicago Rush
Henry Taylor, meet Matt D'Orazio. Predators coach Jay Gruden hopes that Taylor
(below), who tied for the league lead in sacks with nine, gets to know the Rush
quarterback really well. Slowing D'Orazio will be a key; he threw six
touchdowns in a 59--56 win over San Jose in the American Conference final. NBC
3 p.m.
SI PICK OF THE
WEEK
MONDAY 6/12
Czechs and Balances
Four years ago the U.S. opened World Cup play with a stunning 3--2 win over
Portugal, then ranked No. 5 in the world. This year America faces an even
tougher challenge: the No. 2--ranked Czech Republic. Whether the Yanks pull
another first-game upset depends largely on how well they defend in the air.
The Czechs are led by 6'8" striker Jan Koller (left), who scored nine goals
in eight Cup qualifying games, mostly with his noggin. The U.S. will look to
6'4", 210-pound Oguchi Onyewu (right) to outmuscle--and hopefully
outleap-- Koller in Gelsenkirchen. ESPN noon
