Italian Undressing

Italy midfielder Francesco Totti drilled a penalty kick past Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer (inset) in second-half stoppage time on Monday, breaking a scoreless tie in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and propelling the Azzurri into the World Cup quarterfinals (page 44). The PK was awarded after a disputed foul in the box by defender Lucas Neill.

Looking Sharp

Kim Kreiner threw the javelin an American women's record 204'10" to win the event at the U.S. Outdoor Track & Field Championships last Friday in Indianapolis. Former Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones (inset) won the 100-meter dash in 11.10 seconds, her first national title in the 100 since 2002 (page 148).

Stroke of Genius

Natalie Coughlin (center) churned to victory in the 100-meter freestyle final of the Santa Clara International Meet last Friday, outracing Mary Descenza (left), Erin Reilly and six others. Coughlin (inset, at start) finished in a meet-record 54.06 seconds; she also set meet records in the 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 free.
