Mel, a sophomore
righthander at Whiting High, struck out 11 and pitched a one-hitter to give the
Oilers the Class 1A championship and their first state softball title. (The
team was Indiana's first undefeated softball champion.) She led the state in
wins with a 32-0 record and had an 0.42 ERA.

Jackson, a junior
at Lincoln University, won the 100-meter dash, finished third in the 200 meters
and helped the Lions to a second-place finish in the 4�100-meter relays at the
NCAA Division III championships in Lisles, Ill. She was named the meet's most
outstanding female track athlete.

Baseball
Nolan, a junior
southpaw at Greenbrier High, was named The Augusta Chronicle's All-Area
Baseball player of the year after helping the Wolfpack win the Class AAAA state
championship. He was 15-0 this season with an 0.79 ERA, striking out 155
batters and allowing two hits or fewer in 13 starts. He is now 25-0 for his
career.
