What was your welcome-to-the-big-leagues moment? I walked to the clubhouse [in '97], and my locker was next to [four-time All-Star] Matt Williams. I shook his hand, and he said, 'Congratulations.' That's when I thought, I've made it.
What was your most embarrassing moment? In 1998, playing in Colorado, I had a 2--2 count and fouled off like 10 pitches. The next ball was ball three. I ran all the way to first. Somebody said, 'That's ball three.'
Favorite off-day activity? Playing with the kids, Andrew and Jacob. Going to the park, playing ball.
One thing about being a baseball player the public doesn't think about? The travel. The game just comes on TV, and the Reds are playing the Dodgers in L.A. You don't think how they got there.
If I weren't playing baseball, I'd be ... a teacher.
If I were commissioner for a day, I'd ... shorten the season.
