HIS HOUSE in San Jose is already on the market, and now Earthquakes star Landon Donovan appears more likely than ever to rejoin Germany's Bayer Leverkusen--with whom he signed in 1999 at age 16 and which still owns his contract--when his loan to MLS expires on Dec. 31. "I'm probably leaning toward going to Germany," said Donovan, 22, last week after visiting Leverkusen earlier this month. "I know MLS wants me to stay, but Leverkusen would like me to be there too, and I almost feel obligated to them. They said, 'Come back the next half of the season and see how it goes. Then we'll talk afterward. This isn't prison, and we're not going to hold you here.'" Unless MLS comes up with multimillions to purchase Donovan's contract, the three-time U.S. player of the year will leave the league with two titles in four seasons. --G.W.
