McNamara, a junior forward at Bowdoin, scored a record nine goals in the Division III tournament, including a hat trick in the final, to give the Polar Bears their first NCAA title in any sport. She was named New England Small College Athletic Conference player of the year and a first-team All-America.

Kate, a junior at Dublin Coffman High, became Ohio's seventh two-time state champ after going 30--0 and winning the Division I final. The USTA's No. 3 under-18 player in the Midwest, she has won 59 consecutive matches and 118 straight sets.

Paul, a senior quarterback at Reitz High, accounted for seven touchdowns and 451 yards of total offense in the Panthers' 61--60 win over Columbus East High. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards and a TD and rushed 29 times for 232 yards, six TDs and a game-winning two-point conversion.

Aleah LaFrancis
VISTA, CALIF. > Judo
Aleah, a homeschooled seventh-grader, won gold at both the U.S. Judo Association National Championship and the USA Judo Junior Olympics in her age group (11--12) and weight class (42 kg). She also won her division's national freestyle wrestling title and was named California female judo athlete of the year.

SUPERIOR, WIS. > Continental Crossing
Hoff, 63, a retired teacher and football coach, traveled by canoe and bicycle from Washington, D.C., to Astoria, Ore., his third nonmotorized crossing of the U.S. The trek took him 132 days. In 2002 and '03 he hiked the 2,658-mile Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.
