Inspiring He was
the team manager, and he's autistic, so Jason McElwain (above) never got to
play. But on Feb. 15, with McElwain's Greece Athena High ( Rochester, N.Y.) up
by 20 points against Spencerport ( N.Y.), coach Jim Johnson sent in the very
excited senior. McElwain air-balled his first shot and missed a layup. But then
he connected on six three-pointers and a two-pointer to finish with 20 points
in under four minutes. "I was just hitting them like they were free
throws," said McElwain, who in June sold Columbia Pictures the rights to
his life story.
Murry Bergtraum ( New York City) senior guard Epiphanny Prince (right) scored a
national-record 113 points in a 137--32 win on Feb. 1 over Brandeis (New York
City). Bergtraum took heat for running up the score, but the coach said,
"She had a chance to break the record, so we let her go."
Bold On Feb. 4,
Michaela Hutchison, a sophomore at Skyview ( Alaska) High in the 103-pound
class, became the first girl to win a state wrestling title competing against
Swift Breaking a
17-year-old national record set by five-time Olympic champ Janet Evans, Kate
Ziegler, a senior at Bishop O'Connell in North Arlington, Va., won the 500-yard
freestyle at the Washington Metros Championships on Feb. 25 in 4:33.35. Ziegler
finished 20 seconds ahead of her nearest rival.
Prolific In a
match against Barnstable (Mass.) High on May 17, senior attack Max Quinzani
(below) of Duxbury (Mass.) High became the state's career points leader. He
finished his career with 577 points, a new alltime national lacrosse
Throwing just 73 pitches, Highland Park High ( Dallas, Texas) senior southpaw
Clayton Kershaw struck out all 15 batters he faced in a five inning win over
Northwest High (Justin, Texas) on May 19.
( S.C.) High junior wide receiver Marquan Jones (above) tied a national record
with eight TD catches in an 84--41 Nov. 3 playoff victory over Blue Ridge
( S.C.) High.
Alter ( Dayton, Ohio) junior Holly Mangold became the first female nonkicker to
play in an Ohio Division III prep football game on Aug. 25. The 5'9",
310-pound linewoman played offense and defense against Fairmont ( Ohio).
Costa High ( Manhattan Beach, Calif.) senior Alix Klineman (right) had 28 kills
and eight digs in a win over Archbishop Mitty ( San Jose) on Dec. 2. The
6'4" outside hitter is headed to Stanford.
Dimitrios Telonis, a Manlius Pebble Hill (DeWitt, N.Y.) senior goalie, saved
nine shots in a 1--0 win over Faith Heritage ( Syracuse, N.Y.) on Oct. 13. It
was his 75th career shutout, a national record.
