Grand Valley State's victory in the Division II title game made it a clean sweep for small-college programs that were trying to defend their NCAA championships last weekend.

Division I-AA
Kevin Richardson (right) ran for 179 yards and four touchdowns as Appalachian State defeated Massachusetts 28--17 in Chattanooga. The Mountaineers became the first I-AA team to repeat since Georgia Southern in 2000.

DIVISION III
In a rematch of last year's championship game, Mount Union beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 35--16 in Salem, Va. Backup quarterback Greg Micheli completed 18 of 22 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns as the Purple Raiders won their ninth title in the last 14 years.
