The paths of the boys from EPC and Hughes will continue to diverge, but the 30-odd kids and their two small towns will remain linked, at least in the Arkansas record book, by one night and by one game that wasn't supposed to matter. "It's funny about kids that way," Wright, the Hughes coach, would say later. "They can be getting their ass handed to them on the field, week after week, and it don't matter. To them, it's all about that next Friday. Who knows what can happen on that next Friday?"
