NFL Draft in New York City
Selected first overall
Having signed an NFL-rookie-record six-year, $11 million contract three days
earlier, UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman officially became a Dallas Cowboy.
Nov. 12, 1989
at Phoenix

Back from a five-game layoff due to a broken finger, Aikman set the NFL rookie
record by throwing for 379 yards, the last 75 on a TD pass during which he was
knocked unconscious.

Aikman's one-yard sneak with 1:58 left in the fourth quarter was the deciding
score in Dallas's season-opening victory against the Chargers--his first win in
his 12th NFL start.

Named Super Bowl MVP after completing 22 of 30 passes, including four
touchdowns (two of which were to his favorite receiver, Michael Irvin) to lead
the Cowboys to their first title in 15 seasons.

Knocked out of the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers with a concussion
one week earlier, Aikman returned to pilot the Cowboys to their second straight
Super Bowl championship.

Trailing 21-0, Aikman headed a fierce comeback, setting NFC Championship Game
records with 53 pass attempts, 30 completions and 380 passing yards in a losing
effort against the 49ers.
