Again the two were
separated, and Whitson was taken outside. Martin followed. Then came Round 3,
when Whitson rushed Martin and the two went crashing to the pavement. They
flailed away until pulled apart. Whitson shouted at his skipper, "You've
tried to bury me here; you're trying to ruin me." Round to Whitson.
The morning after,
Whitson was sent home by the Yankees until further notice, and Martin went to
Union Memorial Hospital, where the diagnosis was that he had a broken ulna in
his right arm.
Later, at Memorial
Stadium, Martin, his arm in a sling, said, "I didn't win. I can't fight
feet. Maybe I ought to go to one of those karate schools."
