MIDDLETOWN, N.Y.
Swain, 24, a San Jose State senior, won the silver medal in the 156-pound division at the World Judo Championships in Seoul, South Korea, becoming the first American to earn better than a bronze in the event's 14-year history.

JOHN WEISSENRIEDER
BOULDER, COLO.
Weissenrieder, a 21-year-old student at Colorado and a part-time chef, out-pedaled 66 other bicyclists to win the 16-mile Mosquito Pass Challenge in one hour, 20 minutes. The pass is the highest open to bicyclists in the continental U.S.

JODI FIGLEY
ALIQUIPPA, PA.
Jodi, a junior at Hopewell High, shot an 81 at Pittsburgh North Golf Club to earn her third consecutive western Pennsylvania high school girls' title. She beat her nearest competitors by nine strokes and is the defending state high school champion.

DAVE GEISSLER
CHIPPEWA FALLS, WIS.
Geissler, a senior quarterback at Wisconsin- Stevens Point, became the Division III alltime career passing leader when he threw for 301 yards in the Pointers' 35-35 tie with UW-La Crosse. He has a four-year total of 8,650 yards.

AL GROVER
FREEPORT, N.Y.
Grover, 58, piloted the Transatlantic from Saint Pierre, near Newfoundland, to Lisbon, Portugal, in the first unaided Atlantic crossing in a boat powered by an outboard motor. Using three different motors, he took 33 days to cover 2,500 miles.
