Buried a week earlier by Notre Dame, USC regrouped to defeat Washington State 31-13. Tepid Trojan play in the second half kept the Cougars in contention—the score was 21-13 midway through the third quarter—and awakened the Coliseum boobirds. Coach Ted Tollner, the object of increasing alumni criticism, still has Rose Bowl hopes. "This conference won't be decided until the end of November," he said. "We just want to stay alive."
