A 1-0 victory over Virginia gave Duke goal-tender Johnston, a senior, his 44th career shutout, an NCAA record. The previous record of 43 shutouts was set from 1976 to '79 by Peter Simonini of Plymouth ( N.H.) State.

Steffey, 51, a pediatric allergist, caught a 1,116-pound bluefin tuna in North Lake, Prince Edward Island, Canada to break the previous 80-pound-line-class world record by 61 pounds. The fish measured 10 feet in length.

Laurie, a senior at Wichita Collegiate School, won the Class 3-2-1A girls' state tennis tournament for the second consecutive year by beating Kara McFarland of Sterling High 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Her four-year record was 104-1.

Clyde, a junior tailback at Anchorage East High, rushed for a state high school-record 1,474 yards to lead the Thunderbirds to a 9-0 mark and the state championship. In the title game, a 26-0 win over Lathrop High, he gained a season-best 222 yards in 24 carries. Mark, a senior halfback at Dexter Regional High, gained 163 yards in 28 carries in his final regular-season game, a 32-14 win over Foxcroft Academy. He gained 5,365 career yards to become Maine's first 5,000-yard-plus high school player.
