KATHY SLATEN
NEWBURY PARK, CALIF.
Slaten, a righthanded freshman pitcher, led the Cal State-Northridge women's softball team to the NCAA Division II championship. She had a 6-0 record, all shutouts, in postseason play and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

JOHNNY JOHNSON
NASHVILLE, ARK.
Johnny, a senior at Nashville High, broke the state's oldest high school track and field record long jumping 24'2�" at the Class AA championships in McCrory. The former mark of 24 feet was set by Win Whipple in 1933.

KAREN EMAS
MEDIA, PA.
Emas, a University of Delaware junior attack wing, led the Blue Hen women's lacrosse team to an 18-2 record and the NCAA Division I title She was the nation's top woman scorer this year, with 129 points, and was the tournament's MVP.

SHEILA NICKS
TULARE, CALIF.
Nicks, a sophomore at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif., established a national junior college record in the women's long jump with a leap of 21'3�" in Modesto. She broke the old record, set in 1981, by 10 inches.

SUNRISE, FLA.

Flach, a junior, and Seguso, a sophomore, led Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville to a record sixth consecutive NCAA Division II men's team tennis championship, in San Marcos, Texas. Flach won an unprecedented third straight Division II singles title with a 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory over Scott Appledorn of Ferris ( Mich.) State, and then teamed with Seguso to defeat Kevin Platt and Bart Hillock of Cal State-Bakersfield 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 for the Cougars' second consecutive doubles championship.
