Holmes, an 89-year-old author of 42 Western novels, hit 99 of a possible 100 clay pigeons at the Napa Rifle and Pistol Club. In the process he became the first person in the club's 50-year history to break as many as 75 straight pigeons.

Angela, 14, won TAC Junior Olympic state championships in the shotput (36'9�") and discus (99'4") and then improved those marks by 1'5�" and 3'9�", respectively, in winning the two events at the regional in Cincinnati.

Ross, a fifth-grader at the Horace Mann School, was the top hitter and pitcher on his Little League team and won the state elementary school chess title. He's also the nation's No. 2-ranked 10-year-old chess player, with a 1601 rating.

Scott, 17, a 6'1", 185-pound senior running back at Beechwood High, gained 281 yards on only eight carries as the Tigers beat Nicholas County High 49-34. His last four rushes were touchdown runs of 83, 78, 45 and 30 yards.

INDIANAPOLIS
Paraskevin, 23, defeated Erica Salumyae of the U.S.S.R. to win the women's 1,000-meter match sprint for the third consecutive time at the world cycling championships in Barcelona. She was also on the '84 U.S. Olympic speed skating team.

GORDIE GRAHAM
HERSHEY, PA.
Gordie, 13, a lefthanded pitcher on the Hershey Midget All-Stars, struck out 18 batters in a six-inning, 10-4 win over the East Dauphin Nationals. For the season, he struck out 190 in 83 innings, had three no-hitters and was 13-0 overall.
