GOLF—KATHY WHITWORTH fired a nine-under-par 207 to win a $150,000 LPGA tournament in Atlanta by four strokes over Barbara Moxness and Sharon Barrett. It was Whitworth's 83rd career victory, breaking the LPGA record of 82 established by Mickey Wright in 1956-73.
Jack Nicklaus shot a seven-under-par 273 to beat Andy North by three strokes in the $350,000 Colonial National Invitational in Fort Worth.
HARNESS RACING—BEATCHA ($3.40), driven by John Campbell, beat Genghis Khan by 2� lengths to win the $125,000 second leg of the World Cup Pacing Championship series at the Meadowlands. The colt covered the 1� miles in 2:56[1/5], surpassing the world record for the distance of 3:01[4/5] set by Handle With Care at Yonkers Raceway in 1976.
HOCKEY—The New York Islanders won their third straight Stanley Cup, completing a sweep of the Vancouver Canucks in the best-of-seven championship series (page 34).
HORSE RACING—ALOMA'S RULER ($15.80), ridden by Jack Kaenel, beat Linkage by a half length to win the 107th running of the $279,900 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. The 3-year-old colt ran the 1[3/16] miles in 1:55[2/5] (page 98).
Erins Isle ($11.20), Laffit Pincay up, defeated It's the One by a half length to win the $337,000 Californian at Hollywood Park. The 4-year-old colt covered the 1? miles in 1:48.
MOTOR SPORTS—BOBBY ALLISON drove his Chevy to victory by three laps over Dave Marcis' Chevy in the $224,300 NASCAR Mason-Dixon 500. He averaged 120.136 mph around the one-mile Dover (Del.) Downs International Speedway oval.
INDOOR SOCCER—The St. Louis Steamers and the New York Arrows split Games 1 and 2 of the MISL's best-of-five championship playoff series. The Steamers won the opener 3-2 in overtime at New York as Forward Tony Glavin booted his second goal of the game at the 5:55 mark. Steve Zungul scored his 16th goal of the playoffs, a league record, as the Arrows got even with a 5-3 victory in the second game.
