DAN O'CONNELL JR.
Dan Jr., a senior forward at Triton High, scored five goals, the first being the 200th point of his varsity career, during a 15-1 rout of Hamilton-Wenham High that gave his 38-year-old father, Dan. his 200th career victory as the Vikings' hockey coach. Dan Jr. has a four-year total of 108 goals and 121 assists, with 32 goals and 29 assists this season. His father has a 16-year record with the Vikings of 207-89-31 (16-4-1 this season), including three straight Cape Ann League titles.
Devony, a senior guard, has paced the Upson High girls' basketball team to a four-year record of 105-6 and the 1988 Class AA title. At week's end she led the 27-0 Lady Yellow Jackets with 25.5 points and 10.3 rebounds a game.
ESSEX JUNCTION, VT.
Heather, a senior at Essex Junction High, won her third Division I girls' gymnastics all-around title in four years, with 34.6 points, a state record in girls' competition. She won all four apparatuses, while leading the Hornets to the team crown.
Snow, a sophomore forward at Indiana, and Akers, a senior forward at Central Florida, were the men's and women's recipients, respectively, of the Hermann Trophy as the nation's best college soccer players. Snow, the top college scorer as a freshman, scored 22 goals this season as he led the 19-3-3 Hoosiers to their third NCAA title in seven years. Akers, the first female to receive the award, has 52 career goals, including 11 this season for the 10-3-2 Lady Knights.
