A. J. Liebling

Few men know, or love, the venerable sport of boxing better than A. J. Liebling, one of its greatest chroniclers and most knowledgeable historians. At a time when boxing is under indictment by the government of the U.S. as a monopoly, when it is being investigated in three states and faces mounting criticism across the nation, he has turned his discerning eye to that ancient, smoke-hung, sweat-stained hall which is boxing's beating heart, the background against which the continuing story, for good or for evil, of boxing in America must unfold. SI is proud to present the history of Stillman's Gym, the University of Eighth Avenue, and its owner, Lou Stillman, in these pages.
