46 BROOKS LAWRENCE
Throws R, bats R. Rec. 19-10. ERA 4.02. Traded away by Cards after miserable season, has been strong man of Redleg pitching staff and biggest winner. Has sharp control, good curve and sinker. Very strong; can pitch effectively with three days' rest, sometimes works in relief.
39 JOE NUXHALL
Throws L, bats L. Rec. 13-11. ERA 3.59. Big (6 feet 3, 230 pounds) and fast, control trouble has kept him from approaching fine '55 record when he led league in shutouts, won 17 games. Throws very hard, but mixes pitches well; also has curve, slider and changeup.
30 HERSHELL FREEMAN
Throws R, bats R. Rec. 13-5. ERA 3.49. AL castoff who came to Cincy in '55, has been masterful relief pitcher. Perhaps the big reason Tebbetts has been able to keep team so high with weakest pitching staff among contenders. His fast ball smokes, is almost always down low.
18 TED KLUSZEWSKI, 1B
Bats L, throws L. .302 avg. 35 HR. Slow and heavy, but still awesome figure at plate. Overpowers ball, hits vicious line drives even when off home-run range. Murders high balls, but can hit anything. Pitch him low, breaking stuff, move the ball around. Chases low curve and changeup.
16 JOHNNY TEMPLE, 2B
Bats R, throws R. .283 avg. 2 HR. Fiery, highly competitive spark of ball club. In field quick and fast, with wonderful timing, accurate arm. Works with McMillan like well-oiled machine. Best base runner on team; watch him. Not strong but can hit anything; try to keep ball low.
6 ED BAILEY, C
Bats L, throws R. .302 avg. 28 HR. Unimpressive in earlier trials at Cincinnati, has been great young catcher this year. Batting leader first half of season. Good receiver with strong, accurate arm. Hits often and with power, likes fast-ball pitching. Get him out on low-breaking stuff.
20 FRANK ROBINSON, LF
Bats R, throws R. .290 avg. 38 HR. Without doubt, major league rookie of the year, contender for home-run title. Best pull hitter on the team, with great power. Fair speed and range in field, adequate arm. Likes pitch out over plate, has trouble with slow curve and fast ball inside.
11 ROY McMILLAN, SS
Bats R, throws R. .264 avg. 3 HR. One of best shortstops in baseball history. Marvelous instincts, great range, sure hands and powerful, accurate arm; magician on double play. Not topflight hitter but good in clutch; likes fast ball up high, hits to right. Runs bases well.
