ABOUT THE PAINTINGS
John McDonald
May 27, 1957
John Langley Howard, who pictures the Berners' flies in such meticulous detail on the following pages, is an artist known for his extraordinary, almost three-dimensional realism. Because the minute details of these reconstructions are of primary importance, the flies are here shown in enlarged form—a departure from tradition for the sake of clarity. All have been enlarged to precisely twice their actual size. Alternative flies are shown in those cases where the original Berners' directions could not be interpreted with complete reliability.
