Fast and
Fragile
The strapping colt Big Brown, with Kent Desormeaux along for the ride, romped
to the wire in winning the 134th Kentucky Derby by 4 3/4 lengths last Saturday
at Churchill Downs (page 42). Triumph was quickly replaced by tragedy, however,
when runner-up Eight Belles (inset) went down after the finish with two broken
front legs and had to be euthanized on the track.

Bird Watching
Twenty-two-year-old Anthony Kim put all that he had into his second shot, a
270-yard three-wood, on the par-5 15th hole and made birdie in the final round
of the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. In becoming the youngest titlist on
the PGA Tour in six years (inset), Kim finished at 16 under par to win by five
strokes and beat Tiger Woods's tournament record by three.
Rest in Crease
Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec flopped into the goalmouth after the Flyers'
Mike Knuble (inset) scored an empty-netter to wrap up Game 5 of their Eastern
Conference semifinal series last Saturday in Montreal. The 6--4 win eliminated
the Habs and sent Philadelphia into the conference finals against the Penguins
(page 58).
