Then, oil got
cheap. In 1986, Dempsey, who had a wife and three children by then, left the
oil business. Today he's working at Benson Jeep/Eagle, on Veterans Highway in
Metairie, where he'll be happy to sell you a four-wheel-drive.
Does he follow the
he says. "My son Toby is in high school football now, and when I go to a
game, it's one of his." Toby plays for Archbishop Rummel High School, and
Dempsey drops in occasionally to coach the kickers. Of his recent disciples,
three are now on college rosters.
There are no NFL
souvenirs on display at the dealership, not even of the 63-yarder. "All my
memorabilia is in storage," Dempsey says. "That's where it belongs. In
my house, I've got my kids' stuff everywhere, and I prefer that. Those days are
gone for me. Long gone. Heck, that record's 20 years old."
