PRO BASKETBALL—The YOUNGSTOWN ( Ohio) PRIDE defeated the Calgary 88's 109-99 in the fifth game of their best-of-five playoff series to win its second consecutive World Basketball League championship. Pride forward-center Barry Mitchell, who averaged 19.8 points per game, was named MVP.

BOXING—DAVE McAULEY of Northern Ireland retained his IBF flyweight title with a unanimous decision over Rodolfo Blanco of Colombia, in Belfast.

CYCLING—At the World Mountain Bike Championships near Durango, Colo., NED OVEREND of the U.S. defeated Thomas Frischknecht of Switzerland by 2:36 to win the men's cross-country title, while JULIANA FURTADO of the U.S. beat Sara Ballantyne, also of the U.S., by 2:27 to become the women's champ. The men's downhill was won by GREG HERBOLD of the U.S., who was 3.18 seconds faster than Michael Kloser of the U.S., and in the women's downhill, CINDY DEVINE of Canada defeated countrywoman Elladee Brown by .35 of a second (page 38).

EQUESTRIAN—ANNE KURSINSKI, riding Starman, had two penalty-free rounds and a jump-off time of 31.85 seconds to defeat Donald Cheska, aboard Dury Lad, by 1.05 seconds and win a Grandprix event and $22,500 in Devon, Pa.

PRO FOOTBALL—The defending Super Bowl-champion 49ers were 2-0 on the week, opening the season with a 13-12 win over the Saints on Monday night and then knocking off the Redskins 26-13 on Sunday. In San Francisco's defeat of Washington, Joe Montana threw for 390 yards to surpass John Brodie as the 49ers' alltime leading passer, with 31,654 yards. In a showdown of the NFL's youngest and oldest starting quarterbacks, the Colts, with 22-year-old Jell' George, lost 16-14 to the Patriots, with 37-year-old Steve Grogan. Grogan threw for 187 yards and a touchdown, while George was intercepted four times, twice by cornerback Maurice Hurst. After Eric Metcalf returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score, the Browns mustered scant offense and lost to the Jets 24-21. New York running back Freeman McNeil, who was waived and left unclaimed earlier this season, had 142 yards of total offense and a touchdown. The Lions held the Falcons to 141 second-half yards in a 21-14 win. Detroit's Silver Stretch offense was led by Rodney Peete, who threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Bengals overcame a 13-point deficit to beat the Chargers 21-16. Cincy was paced by wide receiver Eddie Brown, who caught 10 passes for 178 yards and two TDs. Dolphin coach Don Shula won his 200th career game as Miami, behind second-year running back Sammie Smith's two touchdown runs, blew out the Bills 30-7. While Viking quarterback Wade Wilson passed for 212 yards and three TDs in Minnesota's 32-3 beating of the Saints, New Orleans's John Fourcade threw his sixth interception in two weeks. In other games, the Steelers defeated the Oilers 20-9; the Seahawks lost to the Raiders 17-13; the Cardinals edged the Eagles 23-21; the Rams crushed the Buccaneers 35-14; the Giants were 28-7 winners over the Cowboys; and the Bears beat the Packers 31-13 (page 40).

GOLF—WAYNE LEVI shot a 10-under-par 278 to defeat Ian Baker-Finch by one stroke and win the Canadian Open and $180,000, in Oakville, Ont. The win was Levi's fourth on the PGA Tour this year.

Jose-Maria Olazabal fired a final-round five-under-par 65 to beat Colin Montgomerie by one stroke and win a European tour event in Saint-Nom-LaBreteche, France. Olazabal, who had an 11-under-par 269 for the tournament, earned $127,350.

Don Massengale put together an eight-under-par 134 to hold off Terry Dill, Dave Hill and Larry Laoretti by one stroke and win a rain-shortened Senior PGA Tour event in Grand Rapids, Mich. Massengale's victory was worth $45,000.

Patty Sheehan shot a final-round two-under-par 70 to beat Deb Richard and win an LPGA tour event in Kent, Wash, Sheehan shot an 18-under-par total of 270 and collected $45,000.

HORSE RACING—DISPERSAL ($15.60), ridden by Chris Antley, defeated Quiet American by 1� lengths and won the Woodward Handicap at Belmont. The 4-year-old colt matched Forego's stakes record by covering the 1? miles in 1:45[4/5]. His victory was worth $354,000 (page 92).
