Joe Ungvary CUYAHOGA FALLS, OHIO Ungvary, 56, a public-information officer for Summit County, Ohio, won the U.S. senior amateur golf title with a record-setting 7-and-6 victory over Jerry Nelson in the 18-hole final. Ungvary closed out the match with a birdie on the 12th hole. No other golfer in the 39-year history of the tournament has prevailed in a final match in so few holes.

Ungvary, 56, a public-information officer for Summit County, Ohio, won the U.S. senior amateur golf title with a record-setting 7-and-6 victory over Jerry Nelson in the 18-hole final. Emily Ransom
SEWARD, ALASKA
Emily, a senior at Seward High, won her fourth consecutive state cross-country championship for classes 1A, 2A and 3A. She covered the 5,000-meter course in 19:57, four seconds faster than teammate Kristel Nelsen, who finished second. Emily is only the ninth high school girl in the U.S. to have won four straight state cross-country titles.

Carlos Quintero
MIAMI
Quintero, 31, a karate instructor, won the men's open-weight kumite (fighting) division for the second year in a row at the karate national championships, in Phoenix. He also got two other medals in the kumite division: a bronze in the 176-pound class and a silver as part of the five-man contingent representing Florida in the team competition.

Thad Amundson
HASTINGS, MINN.
Thad, a senior quarterback at Hastings High, rushed for 180 yards and two touchdowns, completed 10 of 24 passes for 212 yards and two TDs and kicked a 24-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to lift the Raiders to a 31-29 victory over South St. Paul High. After eight games Thad had rushed for 683 yards, thrown for 920 and scored 78 points.

Cheryl Irvine
KING OF PRUSSIA, PA.
Irvine, a field hockey inner, broke the Susquehanna (Pa.) University career scoring record of 56 points as a sophomore during a 3-0 win over Widener (Pa.) University. Through last Friday, Irvine, who was All-Mid-Atlantic Conference in 1992, had 60 points (23 goals and 14 assists) in 29 career games.

Ross Gladding
PORTAGE, MICH.
Ross, 13, won the junior (under 16) division of the national paddleball championship, in Lansing, Mich. Ross, who also won the junior title at this year's Michigan state tournament, took up paddleball only a year ago. His grandfather Gale Greenland was the national men's champion from 1973 through '76.
