Daniels has long argued that his officiating doesn't interfere with his mayoral duties. "I'm never gone for long," he says, "and I am always reachable."
Daniels won reelection on Nov. 5, so obviously a majority of the voters agreed with him. That means he'll be unavailable for a bowl game assignment on Jan. 1, the day he will be sworn in for his second term. But Daniels doesn't plan to quit his refereeing anytime soon. "It gives me a special feeling to be standing on the grass in a place like South Bend, with 55,000 people on their feet, the Notre Dame fight song being played, all that history and tradition," he says. "I can't think of anything else I'd rather do on a Saturday in the fall."
