By Reggie Jackson, a home run deep into the cornstalks beyond the outfield of the Dyersville, Iowa, baseball diamond created for the movie Field of Dreams, in a game to benefit several charities. Despite the homer, Jackson's team of former major leaguers—featuring, among others, Lou Brock and Iowa native Bob Feller—lost the game 9-4 to a celebrity squad that included actor D.B. Sweeney, who played Shoeless Joe Jackson in the film Eight Men Out. Afterward, players from both teams bade farewell to the nearly 1,000 spectators by disappearing into the head-high corn.
After surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee, Washington Bullet forward Bernard King. King, who missed 185 games from 1985 through 1987 after so severely damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in that same knee that it had to be replaced with a band of ligaments from his upper thigh, sustained the more recent injury while exercising on a treadmill.
To his third NASCAR victory in two weeks, Harry Gant, who at 51 became the oldest winner of a Winston Cup race, when he maneuvered from grid position number 13 to defeat Davey Allison at Richmond International Raceway. Using the lights from Paul Simon's Central Park concert in New York City last month, the circuit's first night race at the Richmond track drew more than 63,000 people, the largest crowd ever for a sporting event in Virginia.
As a freshman at Ohio University, Ray Leonard Jr., the son of boxer Sugar Ray Leonard. The 5'9", 175-pound Leonard Jr., who as a six-year-old hawked 7-Up with his father in TV ads, will compete on the Ohio University football and track teams. Bobcat football coach Tom Lichtenberg hadn't known for sure that Ray Jr. would be coming to Ohio U until Ray Sr. revealed it on The Arsenio Hall Show last month.
America's oldest active jockey, Willie Clark, 69, after guiding his final mount, Gamma Force, to a sixth-place finish at the Charles Town Races in West Virginia. Clark (SI, June 3, 1991) began racing in 1945 and rode 1,143 winners while earning more than $1.8 million in purses. Among the jockeys Clark faced in his last race was Larry Reynolds, whose grandfather was an owner Clark once rode for and whose father was a jockey he often rode against.
By a special Marion County ( Ind.) grand jury, former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, for the alleged rape of a contestant in the Miss Black America pageant in Indianapolis in July (SI, Sept. 9). After a four-week investigation during which both the alleged victim and Tyson gave testimony, the grand jury also charged Tyson with two counts of criminal deviate conduct and one count of confinement. Prosecutor Jeffrey Modisett had said a trial would not be held before the end of the year. Tyson is scheduled to challenge heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield on Nov. 8 in Las Vegas.
