Some other intriguing suitors for Sabathia:
Brewers: "They seem to have the prospects and the need," an NL G.M. wrote in an e-mail. That list of top kids starts with outfielder Matt LaPorta (19 homers in Double A, right) and third baseman Mat Gamel (.366 in Double A).
Cubs: Ace Carlos Zambrano just went on the DL with a strained right shoulder. Righthanded starter Sean Gallagher would be an enticing chip, and outfielder Felix Pie and lefty starter Rich Hill—high-ceiling youngsters despite flopping in the bigs this year—are also attractive.
Phillies: A contending team with a desperate need for another starter and a G.M. ( Pat Gillick) determined to win it all in 2008 make Philly an eager suitor, but it doesn't have enough quality prospects. "The Phillies might first have to acquire a prospect [from a third team]," says an AL personnel man.
A's: Adding offense seems to be more of a concern for the young A's, but G.M. Billy Beane always has the prospects, and Sabathia, a native of Vallejo, Calif., would no doubt relish a return to the Bay Area, however brief it may be. "I've learned to never count Beane out," an NL G.M. says.
