Skiing World Championships
The world's best schussers are in Val d'Isre, France, and the event wraps this weekend with the men's and women's slaloms (on NBC). Lindsey Vonn, who last year became the first U.S. woman in 25 years to win the overall World Cup title, likes France: She won her first worlds gold medals, in the Super G and downhill. Said Vonn, "I've just been working my whole life for this moment."

For the first time the game is part of the program for NBA All-Star weekend. (It airs on Saturday on TNT; in a sponsor nod the game is actually G-E-I-C-O.) The three players who will compete hadn't been chosen as of Monday, but Kobe and LeBron better be among them. It would be the best shooting showdown since Bird and Jordan went at it for a Big Mac in their 1993 commercial.

Tournament ready
One shining moment? How about a DVD full of 'em. NCAA March Madness: The Greatest Moments of the NCAA Tournament will hit stores on Tuesday; the NCAA says it's the first compilation of iconic Big Dance memories. Narrated by Jim Nantz, the disc features buzzer beaters (Jordan!), Cinderella stories (Valvano!) and dominating individual performances (Walton!).

Richard Quick
In December the swimming guru (he has coached six U.S. Olympic teams and won 12 NCAA titles at Stanford and Texas) was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor. On Valentine's Day thousands of swimmers will hit pools across the country to support Quick's fight and raise money for the cancer charity Swim Across America. Find info at

To spring training
This applies to ballplayers only. The Indians' pitchers and catchers will be the first to gather in camp, on Feb. 12, a day earlier than every other club's. That should thrill new starter Carl Pavano, who gets extra time to answer questions about old friends' books. He was ripped in Joe Torre's, and next month ex-girlfriend Alyssa Milano releases a baseball ode.
