After missing the first quarter of his rookie season while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, White played 60 games, averaged 12.2 points and earned his way onto the '70 All-Rookie Team. The point guard would lead the Celtics to two championships and make seven All-Star appearances.
AS WITH THIS SEASON'S TEAM, THE GREAT BOSTON squads of the past were built on the concept that the whole was always greater than the sum of its parts. As this roster shows, the parts were quite impressive too.
Russell grabbed at least 49 rebounds in a game three times, twice setting NBA single-game records (with 49 and 51).
His career rebounding average with Boston of 14.0 boards per game is second only to Russell's 22.5 among all Celtics.
In addition to his offensive laurels, Bird was named to the NBA All-Defensive team three times. He is the Celtics' alltime leader in total steals (1,556) and steals per game (1.7).
On Oct. 16, 1963, Cousy's jersey number 14 and Ed Macauley's 22 became the first of 21 numbers (including the 18 worn by both Cowens and Jim Loscutoff) to be retired by the team.
