Joy Of Six
After beating Texas 11--4 in the deciding game of the College World Series, LSU players piled on reliever Louis Coleman to celebrate the school's sixth national championship, on June 24 in Omaha. Rightfielder Jared Mitchell (3), whose three-run homer in the first inning sent the Tigers on their way, was named the series' most outstanding player.
Mat Rebeaud's acrobatics weren't meant to catch the eye of the young cowgirl at the Fort Worth Stock Yards on June 25, but he got her attention anyway. Rebeaud, an FMX competitor from Switzerland, and the unidentified horseback rider were part of the show put on in advance of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour stop.
Tri As He Might
Brad Kahlefeldt of Australia dived for the finish line, but it was Simon Whitfield of Canada who broke the tape to win the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup last Saturday in West Des Moines, Iowa. Jan Frodeno of Germany tried to avoid the sprawling Kahlefeldt.
Rain stopped the Wiimbledon match between Dinara Safina (far right) and Amelie Mauresmo on Monday, but only long enough for the new $150 million retractable roof at Centre Court to be closed. Safina then won the first indoor match in tournament history 4--6, 6--3, 6--4. Soon after, playing on the enclosed and lighted court, Andy Murray beat Stanislas Wawrinka in five sets in the first night match ever staged at Wimbledon, closing out the Swiss at 10:38 p.m. London time.
