Edward M. Kennedy 1932--2009
The senior senator from Massachusetts, who died of brain cancer on Aug. 25, after 46 years in office, not only was an avid sailor (shown at the helm of his boat The Victura, in 1978) but also was a key supporter of the 1972 Title IX legislation, which helped increase women's participation in sports. In the years after the law was passed, Kennedy fought efforts to overturn or weaken Title IX.
