Melanie Oudin, a 17-year-old from Marietta, Ga., packed a wallop in her 3--6, 6--4, 7--5 third-round upset of 29th-seeded Maria Sharapova at the U.S. Open (page 34) last Saturday in Flushing Meadow, N.Y. Two days later the 5'6" Oudin, ranked 70th, defeated 13th-seeded Nadia Petrova, 1--6, 7--6, 6--3, to become the youngest U.S. woman to reach the Open quarterfinals since Serena Williams in 1999.

Clothes Call

Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora had his shirttail ripped out of his pants by a fourth-inning fastball from Rangers lefthander Derek Holland on Sunday in Baltimore. In addition to being hit by this pitch, Mora had a single and scored twice in a 7--0 win over Texas.

Glow Stick

The sun struck Tiger Woods's iron during the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship last Friday in Norton, Mass., but the world's No. 1 player didn't get hot until the final 18. He fired an eight-under 63 on Monday to close at 12 under par, five strokes behind Steve Stricker. With his victory Stricker supplanted Woods as No. 1 in the FedExCup standings.
