At Florida A&M, practice begins with special teams. Coach Joe Taylor does that to stress the value of the little things, which is apropos since his return man, 5'8" senior cornerback LeRoy Vann, is proving so invaluable to the 3--0 Rattlers. Vann not only brought back punts of 40 and 66 yards for touchdowns last Thursday in a 48--10 win over Howard, but he also returned the opening kickoff 68 yards. The week before, he returned punts of 95 and 80 yards for TDs against Winston-Salem State. "At first I wanted to be a big name on defense," says Vann, who became a return man only last year, set the I-AA single-season record for kick-return yardage (1,585) and has now tied the record for career punt-return TDs (seven). "Now I believe in other ways to change a game."
